Objectives of the course:

1. To understand the importance and need of Libraries and Information Centres in society

2. To know the objectives, functions, types, and services of libraries and information centres.

3. To know the extent of ICT application in Libraries and Information Centres.

4. To acquire knowledge on information, information literacy, digital literacy, etc.

Learning outcome

1. Ability to understand the basics of Libraries and Information Centre activities.

2. Knowledge of types of services Libraries and Information Centres usually provide.

3. Enabling students to understand the functioning of Libraries and Information Centres in ICT environment.

4. Empowering students to understand the various aspects of information.

Library Profession, Professionalism and Professional training; Occupation, Vocation, Professional ethics; Dr S.R.Ranganathan and his Five Laws. Library Legislation like salient features of the West Bengal Public Libraries Act,1979; Library Associations (like BLA, APLA, ILA, IASLIC, IFLA, ComLA) and their activities, Library Movement in India, Library and information Science education in India

Definition of data, information, knowledge and wisdom; DIKW pyramid characteristics of information, need of information, digital information; Information Literacy, Digital Literacy and Artificial Intelligence- Concept; Information Explosion; Misinformation and Disinformation-identification and precautions
